Colorado City, Texas: 13-year-old Hailey Dunn was reported missing by her mother, Billie Jean Dunn on December 28, 2010. The last time she had been seen was the day before.
It was not until March 2013 that her body was recovered near Lake J.B. Thom in Scurry County, about 35 minutes northwest of Colorado City.
The man described as the primary person of interest, and the last person to see Hailey, was Billie's live-in boyfriend, Shawn Casey Adkins.
Adkins was arrested on June 14, 2021 and charged with one count of murder after the Texas Rangers Unsolved Crimes Investigation Program identified Adkins as the suspect when reviewing the case and obtained a search warrant to collect a sample of his DNA.
Now a grand jury has indicted Adkins, 35, on one count each of murder and tampering with evidence. He remains in custody in the Mitchell County Detention Center and his court date is not known.
According to Law and Crime, Erica Morse, a private investigator that worked on the case, Hailey's dad, Clint Dunn was the driving force behind this case progressing to the point of seeing Adkins arrested.
"Everyone will learn this moving forward: Clint's intuition... was the driving force in this case, and he is a template for every parent who wants to find justice for their child," Morse was quoted as saying.
Clint released a statement saying, "Right now there are no words to define how I feel. We will let the trial speak the truth. Thank you to everyone who searched for Hailey, and to those who fought tirelessly for an arrest. Hopefully, true justice will come in the courtroom."
An additional statement indicated that Clint remains "grateful for the positive support" but will not be making further statements "until after the trial is over."
An article published by the Abilene Reporter News in 2019, focusing primarily on Clint's frustration at what seemed to be jurisdictional issues hampering the progression of the case, notes that approximately 109,000 images of child pornography, bestiality and deviant acts were discovered on electronic devices in February 2011.
Those devices were reportedly located in the two residences Adkins shared with Billie and his mother in Big Spring.
No indication is given as to whether or not charges were ever filed as a result of those images.
