A mother returned home from work Saturday evening shortly before 8 pm and went to check on her children.
Upon entering a bedroom, she noticed her 6-year-old daughter in bed with 20-year-old Mossett Matthews move hurriedly to pull up her shorts and underwear. The mother told her daughter and son, who was reportedly sitting on the floor playing with an electronic device, to leave the room.
Her children were entrusted into the care of their grandmother while the mother left for a period of time to calm down before returning to confront Matthews.
According to the arrest affidavit, Matthews told the woman, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," without ever specifying what he was sorry for.
The child was taken to Sanford hospital where a Child Protection Team performed a forensic exam and interviewed her and her mother. The girl is said to have stated that Matthews had been abusing her for a year.
Matthews was arrested Sunday August 30 and charged with sexual battery on a person less than 12 years of age. He is being held in the Volusia County Jail without bond. His court date is not listed.
