According to a report obtained by WTLV from the Florida Department of Children and Families, 36-year-old Purkanah Mayo's parental rights had been terminated.
On August 19 she was visiting her daughter.
During that visit, she allegedly stabbed her daughter multiple times with a kitchen knife before turning that same knife on herself.
Both of them were transported to a nearby hospital. 6-year-old Atarah was pronounced dead at the hospital, and Mayo was listed in critical condition for several days but has recovered and was release by doctors on August 28.
Upon her release, Mayo was charged with second degree murder and made her first court appearance on Saturday.
She is due to appear back in court on September 21.
A GoFundMe account has been established in memory of Atarah "to assist with funeral expenses and as a Memorial."
