Glenwood Springs, Colorado: "When you have a mother who's charged with killing two of her young children, I mean it's really, really disturbing and just unacceptable," Police Chief Joseph Deras said. "Our entire community-at-large is really upset about this."
Officers were called to an apartment complex on Soccer Field Road for a report of a stabbing in process at about 2:30 pm on Thursday, December 30.
When officers arrived, a witness was found to be restraining a woman they stated had stabbed her two children. The woman was identified as 37-year-old Claudia Yuri Camacho-Duenas.
Officers located the two children, an 11-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, who had both sustained "life threatening injuries."
Live saving efforts were immediately provided as they were rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the best efforts of the medical personnel, both succumbed to their injuries.
According to their investigation, officers determined that the stabbings began within the apartment and then extended into the parking lot of the apartment complex where she was observed stabbing one of her children by the "uninvolved citizen" that ultimately restrained her until police arrived.
Duenas has been booked into the Garfield County Jail on two counts of first-degree murder.
Officers have not disclosed the motive for the attack and ask that anyone with additional information contact the Garden Springs Police Department at (970) 384-6500.
