Corunna, Michigan: Shiawassee County Circuit Judge Matthew J. Stewart sentenced 53-year-old Mark Latunski to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Thursday, December 15, 2022.
In September, Latunski appeared in court against the advice of his attorney to plead guilty to first-degree murder and mutilation of a corpse. He was officially convicted on the charges on October 19, 2022.
In October 2020, despite previous diagnoses of major depression, paranoid schizophrenia and traits of a personality disorder in 2010 and 2012, he was found competent to stand trial. Latunski had previously been deemed unfit for trial, but that ruling was reversed after he was sent to the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry for treatment.
25-year-old Kevin Bacon, a hairstylist from Swartz Creek, went missing on Christmas Even 2019 and was found dead three days later, hanging from the ceiling by his ankles inside Latunski's home.
During the reading of a victim impact statement written by Kevin's mother, Latunski was told, "In your twisted mind, you probably don't think you've done anything wrong. But our reality has been torn apart from all the pain and confusion we've endured from losing our son and our daughter lost her brother. I don't understand how anyone could want to hurt my son, especially in such a horrific and unbelievable way."
