Gaylon Earl Mathews has worked off and on for the Pickens County Sheriffs Office since the 1980s, according to AJC which cited his Georigia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) records.
His most recent employment was as a probation officer, reportedly between November 2017 and May 2018, but his certification is now suspended due to a “failure to maintain the training standards.”
Nevertheless, Matthews, a 57-year-old resident of Jasper, Georgia, who is known locally as a photographer and creator of a “Photos of Pickens County Georgia” Facebook page, was arrested by his former place of employment on February 4th, and charged with child molestation, and two counts of aggravated child molestation.
Due to the fact that he used to be law enforcement, the Pickens County Sheriffs Department has requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) take over the case.
GBI Special Agent Dustin Hamby is working on the case, and attests that Matthews committed aggravated child molestation between November 1 and December 21, 2014 and again between March 14 and April 15, 2015 with a child under the age of 16. He additionally stated that Matthews committed child molestation between November 1 and November 31, 2014, again, with a child under the age of 16.
His first court appearance was Wednesday, and his next court date is not known at this time. He remains in custody, without bond, at the Pickens County Jail.
