On Friday, January 8 Hocking County Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the Hayden Place apartment complex in Logan, Ohio by the Sheriff's Office after receiving a call reporting suspected child abuse, and that a child was not breathing.
The 2-year-old girl whose name has not been released was transported to the Hocking Valley Community Hospital before being transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital.
On Sunday, January 10, she succumbed to her injuries.
Officers responded to both the apartment and the hospital to conduct their investigation.
"Evidence indicated that the child had suffered from abuse," detectives said according to WLWT.
An autopsy is being conducted by the Franklin County Coroner's Office in order to determine the cause of death.
On January 9, the day before the girl died, 27-year-old Destani Neel and 24-year-old Austin L. Starkey were both arrested and charged with permitting child abuse and endangering children. They are being held in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail on bonds of $500,000.
Their court date has not been updated since what appears to have been their arraignment on January 11.
The matter remains under investigation and additional charges will likely be presented to the Hocking County Grand Jury.
