The Sandy Springs Police Department in Georgia issued a press release on Friday concerning their investigation into the death of a 9-month-old child on March 31, 2021.
Officers were initially called to an apartment for an unresponsive child. That child, who has not been identified because of his age, was rushed to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy was preformed which revealed that the infant had sustained "severe injuries that resulted in his death during his care by the suspect," identified as 28-year-old Dehaven Johnson.
The Atlantic Journal-Constitution cited Sgt. Salvador Ortega, a spokesperson for the Sandy Springs Police Department, as saying that the infant had sustained injuries to multiple parts of his body.
Johnson is in custody at the Fulton County Jail where he has been charged with felony murder, cruelty to children in the first degree, and aggravated battery.
At his first court appearance on April 2 a judge denied him bond, but a bond hearing has been scheduled for April 20 at 9:00 am.
Johnson's previous entanglements with the law concern charges of theft by shoplifting and criminal trespassing.
Officers are asking that anyone with information contact Detective Smith at ksmith@sandyspringsga.gov or (770) 551-3323.
