Downingtown, Pennsylvania: The Chester County District Attorney's Office announced the arrest of 70-year-old George Berry on their website earlier this week.
According to the Daily Local News, Berry is registered with state police as a sex offender following a conviction of aggravated indecent assault of a person under the age of 16 in 2007. He was sentenced to 11-23 months in prison followed by a period of supervised release.
"George Berry engaged in a systematic pattern of horrific abuse of a child he had a duty to protect," District Attorney Deb Ryan said. "Now, a 12-year-old must live with the memories of suffering and harm he inflicted on her. We will prosecute this man to the fullest extent to bring justice and healing to the victim."
According to the information released by the DA's office, the investigation was launched by the Downingtown Police on January 6, 2022 after they were called to the Brandywine Hospital where a 12-year-old child had been brought for care following a sexual assault.
The child told officers that the assault had happened in the home that she and her mother shared with Berry.
The following day a Chester County Detective with the Child Abuse Unit conducted a forensic interview with the child at the Children's Advocacy Center. During that interview, investigators learned that the child had been sexually assaulted "dozens of times" between January 2020 and December 2021.
Berry was located in Houston, Texas where he was arrested on January 12, 2022.
Since his arrest, he has been extradited back to Chester County where he is currently confined in the Chester County Prison in lieu of $1 million bail.
Berry has been charged with 15 counts of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault of a child, and related offenses.
His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for February 2, 2022.
