Information is slowly being release by the Grantsville Police Department concerning an incident that occurred Friday in their small community of about 9,000 located 30 miles west of Salt Lake City, Utah. These are the cities first homicides in two decades.
“It’s upsetting. This is normally a very quiet neighborhood, and any time you have children involved in something, it becomes very emotional very fast,” Grantsville Mayor Brent Marshall said in a statement Friday night.
Shortly after 7 pm police responded to a residence on a "suspected homicide" call. When they arrived they found a woman, two minor females, and a minor male deceased inside the residence.
At that time, a fifth family member, along with the teenage suspect, were being transported by another unidentified person to a local hospital. The fifth family member, later identified as 50 year old Colin Haynie was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and released from the hospital. He has since been speaking with investigators.
At the hospital, the teenage suspect was taken into custody without incident and was booked into a juvenile detention facility. He has yet to be identified by authorities as the district attorney requested that he not be identified until formal charges have been filed. The Statesville has reported that prosecutors are meeting with officers today and those charges will be filed at some time thereafter.
Officers have confirmed that the suspect is facing at least four counts of aggravated murder, one count of attempted murder and multiple discharge of firearm charges. Sargent Fields stated in a press conference on Monday that those charges may change.
“The biggest question everybody has is ‘why’ and, while we may not be directly able to answer that, we hope to be able to gather some information to be able to help people in future to be able to prevent something like this or offer support to those who may need it,’’ Fields said.
The suspect is reported to be refusing to speak with police.
On Monday night hundreds gathered to pay tribute at a memorial for the victims which have been identified as 52 year old Consuelo Alejandra Haynie, 15 year old Alexis Haynie, 14 year old Mathew Haynie, and 12 year old Milan Haynie. Their funeral services are scheduled for this Friday.
The family has an older son that was reported to be away at college at the time of the shooting. He has since returned home to be with his father. Understandably, they have requested privacy at this time.
