Cocoa, Florida: On Wednesday, November 30, the Cocoa Police Department responded to a residence after a call was placed by the mother of one of the suspect's friends after he had returned home saying that Toby killed his mother.
According to the information seen by WKMG-TV, officers located the mother of 17-year-old Tobias Brewer laying on her back in the doorway of the laundry room covered in blood with multiple stab wounds.
As officers were calling for fire rescue, the victim is reported to have taken a breath and to have said, "Toby did this."
She was airlifted to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
Investigators spoke with Brewer's friend and another male. They told officers that they had been in front of the home earlier in the day when they heard loud bangs coming from the back of the home. The friend told officers that he had walked around to the back and seen Toby standing over his mother with a frying pan and heard his mother saying, "Toby, stop."
Brewer departed the scene in a vehicle belonging to his mother before police arrived.
The friends also departed the scene in a vehicle belonging to the victim and followed Brewer to his girlfriend's home where she entered the vehicle. At some point, Brewer and his friends were separated.
Law enforcement in two counties worked to apprehend Brewer as he drove from Brevard County into Volusia County before returning to Brevard where he ultimately crashed into a wooded area just south of the county line and fled on foot.
At about 8:00 pm, Brewer surrendered to Brevard County Sheriff's Office SWAT Officers.
During questioning Brewer is said to have told officers that he attacked his mother because he was tired of her "constantly harping about" him cleaning his room.
Brewer allegedly admitted to stabbing his mother multiple times with a knife that he was known to carry as well as hitting in her in the head with a frying pan until the handle broke. Following the attack, he went into his mother's room to take the keys to both of her vehicles and the money he found in her purse.
He was officially charged on Thursday, December 15, 2022.
Brewer remains in custody at the Brevard County Sheriff's Office on charges of attempted murder, criminal conspiracy capital felony, flee with disregard of safety to persons or property and grand theft motor vehicle.
His next court date is scheduled for January 11, 2023 at 9:00 am.
