Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario: Officers with the Niagara Regional Police Internet Child Exploitation (I.C.E.) unit announced the arrest of 39-year-old Weston Thomas Nesbitt on Tuesday, October 23, 2021.
According tot he statement posted to their website, Nesbitt was charged with one count of possession of child pornography, one count of making child pornography, and one charge of dissemination of child pornography.
Global News confirmed with the District School Board of Niagara that Nesbitt was a grade 7 teacher that had been with the district since 2005, and working at Forestview Public School since 2013.
"This news is distressing to the principal and staff at Forestview, and we understand that it is upsetting for families as well, "Darren VanHooydonk said in a letter to parents. Nesbitt has been suspended and "will not return."
Constable Phil Gavin with the Niagara Regional Police indicated that they do not believe students were involved.
"The investigation, arrest, and charges are not related to his employment," Gavin stated. "The investigation remains ongoing by detectives in our ICE and Technical Crimes Units."
Nesbitt's bond hearing was scheduled for October 24. It is not clear whether he remains in custody.
