61-year-old Mark Vermillion was scheduled to appear in court earlier today on charges related to the October 8 assault on his mother. He is charged with attempted murder, mayhem, and elder abuse.
He is being held without bail in the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility.
Vermillion is said to have called 911 on Thursday and to have informed the dispatcher that he had tried to kill his mother with a hacksaw.
When officers arrived to the scene, they found his mother in her bedroom with her right foot partially amputated. She was given emergency medical treatment and taken to a nearby hospital for further care where she was listed in stable condition.
According to KTLA, officers recovered a note from the residence, but did not disclose the contents of that note.
Vermillion was detained at the scene and taken into custody without incident.
The case is still under investigation and officers are asking that anyone with information contact Investigator Andrade at (951) 245-3300.
