North Miami Beach, Florida: Shortly after 2:00 am on Tuesday, December 27, a woman called 911 to report that a child had been stabbed and killed by her mother according to the arrest affidavit released by the North Miami Beach Police Department.
According to the affidavit emergency dispatch called back and made contact with the woman, later identified as Jellisa Baxter.
The dispatcher reportedly asked what had happened and Baxter is said to have answered saying she had killed her 3-year-old daughter. When asked how she had done that Baxter allegedly admitted to attempting to stranger her daughter first and then "when that didn't work" she stabbed her in the chest and neck.
Baxter described herself as wearing a white robe.
Once officers arrived to the apartment, they located Baxter in the living room wearing a white robe. Shortly thereafter, she was taken into custody.
The body of 3-year-old Arya Smith was found on the floor with "several deep stab wounds to her chest, neck, and face." She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A knife was found next to her body.
Baxter has been booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. She is being held without bond.
Baxter had no previous criminal records with local law enforcement and on Instagram she described herself as a holistic health coach, endometriosis warrior, and mental heath advocate according to the Miami Times Online.
The Miami Herald reports that on December 15 the Greenview Apartments filed an action in Miami-Dade court seeking her eviction.
