Cobb County, Georgia: "This is the beginning of breaking generation curses for my family," the mother of one victim stated in court during her victim impact statement on Monday, March 7, 2022 at the sentencing hearing for Bennie Johnson.
66-year-old Johnson was sentenced to two terms of life in prison with an additional five years.
Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady revealed that Johnson was convicted late last month on charges of rape, aggravated child molestation and two counts of child molestation.
Following the sentencing, Assistant District Attorney Alex Clark released a statement saying, "I am thankful for the hard work of our District Attorney's Special Victims Unit, law enforcement partners, SafePath Children's Advocacy Center, WellStar, and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Based on the sentencing today, Johnson will never be able to abuse another child again."
The investigation began in 2017 when he was accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl. During the course of investigation, law enforcement learned that the child's mother had also been sexually assaulted by Johnson as a child.
Johnson was arrested in May 2018 and has been in custody since.
WAGA, the Fox affiliate in Atlanta, revealed that evidence presented at the trial included testimony of the now 12-year-old child, the mother, and another family member that testified that she had been raped as a child while Johnson was married to her mother.
