On December 19th, 21 year old Dylan Merrifield was attacked by Carl Andrew Stroud while he waited for his father to pick him and his girlfriend up from an apartment on East Seneca Avenue.
Since that day, Dylan has remained at MercyOne Hospital where his body is fighting falling into a coma due to the trauma. According to reports, he has suffered a skull fracture, brain damage and a massive laceration to the side of his head which required numerous staples.
Court documents state that witnesses at the scene heard Stroud yelling, “I am God. I’m trying to save the kid.”
According to court records, Stroud has an extensive criminal history including 12 cases of assault, violence and domestic abuse dating back to 2003.
At the time of the attack, Stroud was on probation for a 2017 operating while intoxicated conviction that involved assault on a Polk County Sheriff and a State Trooper. As a part of the plea agreement, the assault charges were dropped, and Stroud was sentenced to a five year suspended sentence for what was then his third OWI.
Stroud was arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail on new charges of assault and willful injury in addition to his parole violation. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on December 30th at 8am.
