Just hours after being born, a baby was strangled by the very people that should have cared most for him.
In a statement on their website, the Oxnard police state that officers responded to St John's Medical Center on July 19th at approximately 7:53 am regarding a suspicious injury report. When officers arrived on scene, they learned that an infant was in critical condition with suspicious injuries.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, they were unable to resuscitate the child and he succumbed to his injuries.
Detectives from Oxnard police's Family Protection Unit was called to the scene and began an investigation. According to Oxnard police Sgt. Brandon Ordelheide, the couple admitted under questioning that they did not want the child.
David Villa, 21, and Andrea Torralba, 20, were taken into custody on Friday and charged with assault on a child resulting in death. The felony is punishable by a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
Villa is being held in lieu of $5,000,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Tuesday the 23rd.
Torralba is being held on $1,000,000 bail, and it is unclear when she is due to appear in court.
