Newport News, Virginia: A six-year-old is in police custody after reportedly shooting a teacher in the chest while at Richneck Elementary School at about 2:00 pm on Friday, January 6.
The school will be closed both Monday, January 9 and Tuesday, January 10, the School Superintendent Dr. George Parker III announced.
By Saturday afternoon Abby Zwerner, 25 , the teacher who was shot, was listed as being in stable condition at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
Following the shooting, the school was placed on lockdown for about an hour while students were moved to the gym. Police assisted with reuniting children to their families as they were dismissed by grade level.
After the children were reunited with their families, Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew held a brief press conference.
"The individual is a 6-year-old student. He is right now in police custody," he confirmed to reporters adding that, "
Police indicate that this was "not an accidental shooting" and that it seemed to take place during "an altercation." The investigation remains ongoing.
"I want to know where that firearm came from, what was the situation," Drew said.
According to Daily News, under Virginia law, if the child is convicted of any charges he is too young to be held in a juvenile detention facility.
