On August 28 US Boarder Patrol agents at the Laredo crossing conducted a consensual non-intrusive search of a commercial vehicle that was passing through the crossing. During that search, a female minor was located hiding in the closet space of the tractor's sleeper cab.
Agents detained the driver and the female, and contacted the Webb County Sheriff's Office who took both of them into custody pending further investigation.
While the identity of the girl has not been released, what has been at this time is that the girl was a minor out of Odessa, Texas that had been missing since May, and a Cuban national with legal U.S. residency. According to KWES she was taken to the Webb County Youth Village for a forensic interview at the Child Advocacy Center.
The driver, 28-year-old Jorge Carlos Leyva Santana was described as also being a Cuban national with legal U.S. residency and unrelated to the girl. He has been charged with harboring a runaway.
No further information has been released at this time.
