Amite, Louisiana: Officers with the Amite City Police Department announced on Saturday, June 25, that possible human remains had been recovered from a residence after they had received a tip the day before.
Amite is located approximately 60 miles northeast of Baton Rouge.
According to a post on Facebook, the Amite City Police Department and detectives from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office responded to the unoccupied residence with a search warrant.
Once inside the home, officers noticed that some of the floor had recently been replaced. Once the floor was removed, possible human remains were located buried in the ground beneath.
The remains have been sent to the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office for identification.
39-year-old Joanna Phelps was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and failure to report the commission of a crime. She was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail.
The department did not disclose any possible link between Phelps and the remains stating simply that the investigation is ongoing and "therefore we are unable to release any more information at this time."
