Boston, Massachusetts: A veteran of the Boston Police Department since 2008, 37-year-old Joe Martinez was arrested on Thursday, March 17, 2022 after turning himself in to the Norwood Police Department.
Following his arrest, Martinez was placed on administrative leave from the police department.
At a hearing today, his bail was set at $10,000 which his attorney, Kenneth Anderson, argued was an amount that he would not be able to post as his client was now living out of his vehicle following the charges. Anderson sought to have Martinez released on his own personal recognizance.
Martinez plead not-guilty to charges that include possession of child pornography, posing a child under the age of 18 for nude photos, and secret sex surveillance of a person under the age of 18.
Martinez has been accused of secretly recording the child in and around the shower resulting in five videos as well as taking images of a sexual nature that were then later photoshopped.
When asked why he did these things, Martinez is said to have answered saying, "I don't know. I have a problem. I have all these thoughts in my head," the prosecutor told the court.
Anderson described his client after the hearing by saying, "He did two deployments, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. I think there's some things inside of him probably from that service that he's still dealing with and that's the best I can tell you now."
In a statement released by the Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long said "The alleged behavior committed by this Boston Police Office is disturbing. The Boston Police Department will continue to hold its officers to the highest standards."
Martinez is due back in court for a preliminary hearing in May.
