According to a statement made to police, a 17-year-old girl said that she and her parents had gotten into an argument about running away. In response, her parents took away her cell phone and chained her to her bed.
She managed to use her Apple watch to contact a friend who then notified law enforcement.
According to investigators, there was a bucket near the bed should she need to use the restroom when they found the teen crying, chained to a bedpost.
Officers stated that they found chain marks on her ankle where she was restrained, but they were minor and did not require treatment.
Her parents, 35-year-old Jose Samuel Gonzalez and 37-year-old Yessica Sabala Funes were both arrested on a charge of cruelty towards a child without great bodily harm.
Their bond was set at $5,000 each and on Friday they were released from the Lee County Jail. They are due to be back in court on September 29th at 8:30 am.
The Florida Department of Children and Families' Office of Child Welfare is involved in this case.
