Louisville, Kentucky: Officers responded to a call Tuesday at approximately 9:30 pm after a woman stated that they had seen 28-year-old Kaitlyn Higgins with a gun carrying a boy wrapped in a blanket.
When officers arrived on scene, they reportedly found her on the front porch of a residence and observed blood on the first steps of the porch.
Convinced that there was an emergency based on information they had, officers opened the trunk of a vehicle that Higgins identified as hers. Inside they found the body of her 10-year-old son Kyon Higgins Jr. dead from a gunshot wound.
According to the arrest report filed by officers Higgins gave a post-Mirandized statement in which she "admitted to attempting to cut the victim's tongue out of his mouth" before shooting him.
Higgins has been charged with murder- domestic violence and tampering with physical evidence. She made her first appearance in court earlier today where Jefferson District Judge Jennifer Wilcox agreed to a motion filed by the Commonwealth to raise her bond.
"The Commonwealth has made a motion today to increase your bond to $500,000," Wilcox told Higgins during the online hearing. "Having reviewed the violent nature of these allegations and your criminal history, I do believe that that is appropriate and I will grant the motion."
Higgins remains in custody of Louisville Metro Corrections and is due back in court on May 3.
WHAS spoke with Miah Lancaster who would babysit Kyon and his 2-year-old brother who is now in the care of relatives.
"This wasn't the Kaitlyn I knew," Miah said. "[Kyon] was a sweet loving child, he was such a good boy."
