Lawrence, Kansas: 25-year-old Regan Gibbs-Marek was found dead in her apartment on the night of Monday, May 16 and her husband, 26-year-old Chad Joseph Marek has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Records indicate that the couple married last fall.
A GoFundMe account was soon established in order to help the family with funeral expenses for the former University of Kansas soccer goalie. As of this writing, the goal of $20,000 has been exceeded.
Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart spoke with reporters following the arrest.
Lockhart disclosed that it was Merek that had called 911 to report that he had killed his wife. When a reporter asked about a possible motive for the crime Lockhart answered by saying, "He told us that God told him to do it."
"There is a lot more [that was said] that I don't have with me right now."
The matter is still being investigated, but Lockhart disclosed that mental health is a consideration.
"There obviously are some preliminary indicators that this person wasn't mentally stable," Lockhart said. "We call it being in psychosis, so obviously that is something we will be investigating as well as this case continues."
An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday, May 19 in order to determine cause of death. Due to the condition of her body, investigators were not able to make a clear determination.
While the Lawrence Police Department was not able to determine if they had been previously called to the apartment before, they were able to state that Marek was not someone that was known to them previously.
Tuesday afternoon Marek made his first appearance in court where his bond was set at $1 million. His next scheduled court date is May 24, 2022.
