Midland, Virginia: At 6:00 pm on the evening of Friday, February 14, 2020, a man later identified as Joshua Norwood called police to report that he had found his wife, 34-year-old Jennifer Norwood, and son, 6-year-old Wyatt Norwood both shot, and that he had been shot as well.
Leviathan "Levi" Henry Norwood then took off in a 2007 Toyota Camry and was located and taken into custody the following evening in North Carolina after Target employees called police to report a shoplifter.
Joshua was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He survived his injuries but just over two months later, he was found dead.
According to his mother, Ginny Norwood, he called her before taking his life and told her "not to be sorry" but to "be happy because he would be with Jen and Wyatt." She called the police from her residence in Maine to report his death.
On Monday, August 22, Norwood entered a plea of guilty to the charge of first-degree murder of his mother, and a reduced charge of second-degree murder of his brother. As a result of the plea agreement, the remaining charges against him were dropped.
His next hearing is scheduled for November 3, 2022.
Since his arrest, the now 19-year-old Norwood has undergone psychiatric evaluations and his attorney had considered entering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Ultimately he was determined to be competent to stand trial.
According to Law and Crime, Norwood had told his girlfriend before the murders that he was schizophrenic, depressed, anxious, and would see "shadow people." He had additionally spoken to her of his desire "to kill his mother."
