Ada, Oklahoma, 53-year-old Larry Doil Sanders has been charged with the murder of his friend, 53-year-old Jimmy Glenn Knighten.
He was initially taken into custody on Saturday July 9, on a warrant related to unpaid fines in two drug-related cases according to The Oklahoman. At the time of his arrest he was on probation from a 2019 conviction after reportedly being caught bringing methamphetamine into the Pontotoc County Jail following an arrest for public intoxication.
While speaking to police following that arrest, he told investigators with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation that he and Jimmy had gone noodling on Saturday and that while they were on the South Canadian River, he claimed that he became aware that Jimmy "intended to feed him to Sasquatch/Bigfoot" according tot he report written by Special Agent Justin Brown.
"He appeared to be under the influence of something," Sheriff John Christian said of Sanders. "His statement was that Mr. Knighten had summoned Bigfoot to come and kill him; That's why he had to kill Mr. Knighten."
Christian outlined the series of events in his report explaining that "Larry advised he believed Jimmy was trying to get away from him that the sasquatch could eat Larry. Larry would not let Jimmy get away. Larry punched Jimmy and struck Jimmy with a stick. Larry and Jimmy fought for an extended amount of time on the ground" before "Larry confirmed he killed Jimmy by choking him to death near the river."
With the assistance of a map that Sanders provided, investigators recovered Jimmy's body on Sunday.
A GoFundMe account has been established to assist with Jimmy's funeral expenses. According to the campaign, Jimmy leaves behind four children and six grandchildren.
According to court records, Sanders is due in court on Tuesday, July 26 at 1:30 pm.
