Last Wednesday, March 3, a man was seen walking down the street of the Harodi district in Uttar Pradesh with the severed head of his 17-year-old daughter.
He was headed towards the police station.
Officers intercepted him before he could arrive at the station, and one of them began to film the encounter on his cell phone. The footage of this encounter went viral for a period of time on Thursday before being largely scrubbed due to the graphic nature of its content.
In the video the man, identified as 45-year-old Sarvesh Kumar admits to killing his daughter because of a relationship that she was in. She was the eldest of his four children.
"That's my daughter's head," he tells the officers. "I cut her off." He told officers that he couldn't find the man that his daughter was involved with "else I would have killed them both."
He showed no remorse as he told them "I did it. There was no one else. I closed the latch and did it. The body is in the room."
He was taken into custody without incident. His wife has also been arrested at the time of this writing, but her name has not been disclosed.
"A person named Sarvesh killed his teenaged daughter and was spotted carrying her severed head on the road," Kapil Deo Singh, an official with the police in Hardoi stated. "We intercepted him as soon as we received information about it and have taken him into custody. We have also taken serious note of a photo which shows a police official carrying her head inappropriately. The cop has been suspended."
