The Roseville Police Department announced on Thursday September 3 that they had arrested 61-year-old Steven Ellis Murray on 42 counts of sexual assault involving a child which took place between 1988 and 1993.
Ellis is being held at the Placer County Jail in lieu of $2 million bail.
The Sacramento Bee reports that the alleged crimes are not subject to California's statute of limitations restrictions because they were all reported to police within the last year.
Ellis, who has worked as a real estate agent and civil volunteer according to the Mercury News is due to be back in court on September 16 at 1:30 for a status conference.
Police have stated that the charges stem from children that had been left in his care, not those that he met through his work or volunteer endeavors.
The investigation remains ongoing and police have not ruled out the possibility of there being more victims. They are asking anyone with information to please contact Detective Alana Grove at agrove@roseville.ca.us or the Roseville Police Department’s investigations unit at (916) 746-1059.
