Deer Park, New York: Officers responded to a multi-family home at about 7:00 am on Wednesday morning to find a man standing outside "covered in blood."
At the scene 33-year-old Gabriel Cabral was arrested and has been charged with second-degree murder. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday in Suffolk County District Court.
Inside the residence officers found his mother, 54-year-old Olga Cardona-Hernandez was found on the kitchen floor with multiple stab wounds. The kitchen area was described by officers as appearing "ransacked."
Olga is said to have lived alone.
Officers are still investigating the motive for the stabbing and stated that there had not been any previous reports of domestic issues between Olga and her son.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told media at a press conference that they believed that Cabral had traveled from his residence in Brooklyn to Deer Park on Tuesday night in order to visit his mother.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Citing an unnamed source "with knowledge of the investigation" WNBC indicated that Cabral had arrived at his mother's residence on Tuesday night but soon thereafter left to check himself into Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip for a psychiatric evaluation due to not feeling well.
Cabral is said to have then returned to his mother's home where he got into an argument with his mother before allegedly fatally stabbing her.
