Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office issued a statement concerning the arrest of 34-year-old Wendell Sanchez last week after he was arrested on October 18.
Officers were called to a Gonzales area hospital Sunday evening shortly after 7 pm on reports that a child had been molested.
The 11-year-old girl had been brought to the hospital complaining of abdominal pains.
During the course of the investigation it was determined that the girl was pregnant and had been brought to the hospital by Sanchez, who was waiting in the parking lot in his vehicle and reportedly the father.
When deputies approached, he drove away before eventually abandoning his vehicle near an apartment complex and ran away on foot. He was found a short while later hiding on a patio of one of the residences.
While he was being arrested, a search of his person revealed drugs and drug paraphernalia.
He was arrested and charged with first-degree rape with a victim under the age of 13, resisting an officer, possession of schedule II CDS, drug paraphernalia, criminal trespass, simple criminal damage to property, possession of marijuana, illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of person under 17, creation of a clandestine lab, no drivers license, and no tail lamps.
He remains in the Ascension Parish Jail in lieu of $540,000 bond.
