Boone County, Arkansas: A man that amputated part of his leg with a chop saw in front of his 5-year-old daughter has been charged with endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree.
On August 2, officers responded to an emergency call concerning a male with an amputated leg.
Officers found 48-year-old Shannon Cox "lying in front of the residence naked and missing a portion of his right leg," according to the affidavit filed in the case. When asked how he had sustained the injury Cox stated "with a chop saw."
Officers located the missing portion of his leg "in place still laying on the saw" and noted that there was "blood splatter on the floor of the residence leading to a large Rigid chop saw" and additional blood on the saw and wall.
Shortly after officers located Cox he was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injury.
While further investigating the residence officers noted a vehicle with the hood up. Placed atop the battery of the vehicle was a 20-pound container of propane and Cox's driver's license.
"I also noted there were ashes inside the vehicle and the rear passenger window was broken out," Investigator Corporal Jason Brisco write in the affidavit.
Cox's wife, Sandy Cox, 30, was contacted and asked to come to the Sheriff's department.
During an interview, Sandy informed investigators that her husband had been acting "odd all day long" and that she had left after becoming concerned for her safety.
"Sandy said he was telling her that he was Jesus Christ and that she needed to get right with the Lord. Sandy said he then became violent towards her and said he was Satan. He told Sandy that he was going to twist her head off and continued to make verbal threats," the affidavit states.
Sandy left the residence at about 8:15 pm and did not return. When asked why she had not taken her daughter with her, she told the investigators that "she was worry about Shannon killing her and wasn't worried about her daughter."
Sandy has also been charged with endangering the welfare of a minor in the first-degree.
During an interview the following day at Grandma's House Child's Advocacy Center, the girl disclosed that she was present when her father amputated his leg and "did seem to still be in some state of shock."
After posting $10,000 bond, Cox was released from custody and ordered not to have contact with his daughter or his wife. He is scheduled to be back in court on October 18, 2022 at 8:30 am.
Sandy has also been released on bond and is scheduled to be back in court on the morning of October 18, 2022.
