Eight teenagers rode four ATVs to a home in Norway, South Carolina to look around after hearing that the home was "haunted."
On the back porch of the residence, one of the individuals saw a deep freezer and opened it.
"As soon as the seal broke loose, it was just a horrifying smell," Corey Antley told WACH. "It's something you won't forget, really."
Another of the teens, Riley Robinson said, "I didn't know what to do, I was speechless. I heard that once you smell a human you can't ever forget it. And I can still smell it right now."
Investigators confirmed that at approximately 5:40 pm on Sunday, January 3, the teens had discovered human remains.
The Orangeburg County Chief Deputy Coroner Sean D. Fogle is working to identify the remains and to also determine a cause and manner of death.
"This process will take some time as we methodically investigate this case to ensure proper closure and positive results."
The homeowner of the abandoned home was said to have been cooperating with investigators.
Earlier today, Orangeburg County Fire Services confirmed that the residence at which the body had been found has burned to the ground. The ruins were reportedly still smoldering when crews arrived to the scene.
Investigators have not made any statements concerning when the fire may have started or how.
