Authorities in Austria are investigating an allegation made by a 45-year-old man that was recently discovered in a home's basement after a "sanitary mishap" brought firefighters to the residence on Thursday, September 10.
Reported to be in poor health, the man was transported to a hospital for treatment and as of last Friday had not yet been interviewed according to Police spokesman Daniel Fürst, due to his poor condition.
During that transportation, the man alleged that his mother had trapped him in the basement since April
The 77-year-old mother reportedly told police that her son could have left the basement at any time.
Investigators are looking into whether or not this is a case of false imprisonment which according to many, is similar to the case of Josef Fritzel who was sentenced in 2009 for keeping his own daughter imprisoned in a basement for 24 years and fathering a number of children with her, one of which died.
